Rolling in Brazil

Autotravi, a major South American automotive supplier based in Caxias do Sul, Brazil, recently started to produce window rubber seals made of bio-based ethylene-propylene-diene rubber (EPDM) from ARLANXEO. Autotravi supplies Marcopolo, a prominent Brazilian bus manufacturer, with seals made of Keltan® Eco 5470. This weather-resistant synthetic rubber contains up to 70 percent ethylene obtained from sugarcane, and has an impressive set of properties that is in no way inferior to that of “conventional” EPDM.

Cristiano Grillo from Autotravi explains his choice: “Sustainability of tomorrow needs immediate decisions, and Autotravi decides now to change tomorrow with Keltan® Eco in our products!” There are good reasons why Autotravi chose Keltan® Eco 5470, says Martin Kleimeier, project director and Global Marketing Manager for the ARLANXEO Keltan® business line: “Keltan® Eco 5470 reduces our dependency on fossil resources and, because it is obtained from renewable sugarcane, has a significantly better CO2 footprint than petroleum-based polymers.”

Due to the combination of a highly crystalline structure and a narrow molecular weight distribution, Keltan Eco® 5470 is a very durable polymer. The end product displays high strength, as well as in addition to the ozone, UV and heat resistance typical of EPDM rubber products. Keltan® 5470 and the “green” variation, Keltan® Eco 5470, differ only in terms of the origin of the ethylene used in manufacturing. As with all Keltan® Eco types the switch from the conventional grade Keltan® 5470 to it’s bio-based counterpart Keltan Eco 5470 imposes no requirements on users, except a decision to commit to more sustainable products; the products perform exactly like their conventional counterparts and can be exchanged without any approval. The bio-based ethylene content, however, can be verified by testing method ASTM D-6866.


Keltan® Eco 5470 is one of six bio-based rubber polymers from ARLANXEO. Keltan® Eco 6950 and Keltan® Eco 9950, for example, offer both a high molecular weight and a diene content of around nine percent, making them ideal for fabricating foamed sections for automotive window seals. “All six grades are now available on the market,” says Marjan van Urk, “and interest in the industry is high, which undoubtedly is due to the increased demand from the market for sustainable products.”
